During your first night out

Planning your first night out from the dating app? Here's how to make it memorable and meaningful.

  • Prioritize Safety & Comfort: Always choose a public place for your first meeting. Let a trusted friend know your plans – who you're meeting, where, and when. Arrange your own transportation to and from the date. And be aware of the resources you can go to seek for help. Feeling safe helps you relax and be yourself.

  • Choose Activities that Foster Conversation: Opt for settings where talking is easy and natural. Think coffee, a walk in the park, casual drinks at a quiet bar, visiting a museum, or Browse a market. Avoid movies, loud concerts, or group hangouts with your friends for the first meet. In addition, a shorter first date (around 1-2 hours) can keep things low-pressure. If you click, it leaves you both excited for a second date. If you don't, it's easier to politely wrap things up.

  • Ask Open-Ended Questions: Move beyond yes/no questions. Ask things that start with "What," "How," or "Why" to encourage more detailed and personal responses. Examples: "What are you most passionate about lately?" or "What's something you're looking forward to?"

  • Practice Active Listening: Don't just wait for your turn to talk. Truly listen to understand their perspective. Ask follow-up questions based on what they say. Showing genuine curiosity is incredibly connecting.

  • Put Your Phone Away: Give your date your undivided attention. Keep your phone silenced and out of sight. Being fully present shows respect and makes the other person feel valued.
